Letter Height : Visibility Chart

Our designers are quite diligent about checking letter visibility regulations and recommendations before submitting proofs - especially if it is for an address sign where unique municipal laws come into play.

While there is no universal legislation for the size of letters on an address sign, it is certainly an important consideration since your guests and (perhaps more importantly) emergency services will need to find you with ease!

To give you a better idea of how large letters on a sign should typically be, we refer to a study conducted by the Pennsylvania Transportation Institute, Penn State University and the United States Sign Council (USSC).

Viewing Distance
Minimum Required Letter Height
100 ft
4”
250 ft
10”
360 ft (city block)
16”
500 ft
22”
750 ft
33”
1000 ft
43”
1320 ft (1/4 mile)
57”

So, now you know! For most house signs, 4" - 10" will be plenty, I mean who need their address visible from a 1/4 mile away!? But this is likely not the case if you are a business owner looking to make a BIG statement.

The above is based on naturally lit signage featuring Helvetica letters, and it is cautioned that color scheme, font selection and weather will all effect how precise the above information is.

If you have any questions about your next house or business signage project, give our design experts a call! We'd be happy to answer your questions and guide you through the process - we are experts in our field, and we love it when readers like you, reach out to us!
